The Stallion Ring

fjord9.jpg (20870 bytes)Ring (N-S-009-S) was imported in utero by Harold Jacobsen. His dam was the champion Norwegian trotter Laila (N-13716, N-O-118-M S1). His sire is the famous stallion Apollo (N-1803). Although he is of relatively short stature, Ring's offspring are uniformly taller than he, but with the strong bone that is one of his prominent characteristics. He is well known for his agreeable temperament, and this temperament is inherited by his progeny. Two Ring sons (by the two foundation mares we first started with) were part of the three-horse hitch Dave McWethy drove cross country some years back (now owned by Roberta Peacock and Dan Ambrose in CA). Dave has described them as "two very special horses, strong and healthy and with good minds".

Ring has an outstanding Fjord head and face, dry, clean hocks, and good round feet. His body is compact and powerful, and he uses it well. His movement can best be described as rounded, meaning that he rounds upward, bends his hocks and knees and pushes off and goes forward. It is not an exaggerated up and down movement that goes nowhere. This movement enables him to get his hocks under his body, push off powerfully, and collect. His movement comes from the hind legs, up and through the muscles of his back and neck as opposed to just his legs moving to carry his body forward.

A number of Fjords with Ring in their background are active today. They include Nottawa Crossing's mare Tundra (sired by Solar out of Katina by Ring). According to Lindsay Sweeney, "The Solar/Ring-daughter cross has worked very well for us, and all the offspring produced from these bloodlines have been excellent Fjords with phenomenal work ethics." Another example is Val Fisher's Solar mare Freya (out of Marguerite by Ring).

Another example is Penfrydd's Raynor, now owned by Ursula and Brian Jensen. Raynor is out of Ceacy Henderson=s fine stallion Konggard and Velsigne, a Ring/Eglantine daughter. Like Ring, Raynor has been described as "compact, with very good withers and deep girth....large, expressive eyes and a strong jaw. His most positive trait is his movement."

We have several Ring (By Mirabelle or Gitane) sons and daughters still on the farm for viewing. All are well-tempered and powerful animals with strong bone, deep wide chests, and good rumps.
