In addition to my interest and involvement on the farm, my full time job since 1979 has been as a Pest Management Specialist at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. After receiving my BS in 1964 at Holy Cross College, I have earned both MS and Ph.D. degrees at UMass in the field of Plant Science.
Like many people in our age group, Norma and I were brought up in a time of seemingly unlimited resources and opportunity, dramatic increases in our standard of living and incredible advances in the fields of science and technology.
Sugaring came early in 2010, matching a trend that we have noticed for many years of earlier and earlier sap flow. We were tapped early (by Feb 22), and were able to collect sap from those early runs. It’s fortunate that we did, because the season sort of petered out as we got further and further into March, the normal peak sugaring time. In spite of the odd season, syrup quality was good and we ended up with a decent year.
